Send a Message to Your Legislator Supporting the Cigarette Tax Increase


Increasing the state's cigarette tax by $1 per pack will save lives, improve the health of Illinoisans and substantially reduce costs for the Medicaid program by preventing kids from starting to smoke and getting some adults to quit. It will also generate $377 million in critically needed revenue, matched dollar-for-dollar by the federal government when used for Medicaid, for a total of more than $750 million. 

Protect Medicaid for Patients and Health Care System

The Governor is calling for a $2.7 billion reduction to Medicaid, including a rate cut of more than 8 percent ($350 million) to hospitals alone. Medicaid is a vital program for patients, communities, and the state's health care delivery system. Illinois hospitals are strongly committed to help reform Medicaid and health care system, but oppose drastic cuts that would harm patients.  Read more...
